Eisenstadt, Bergkirche (Haydnkirche) church. - The composer was Kapellmeister (music director) to Prince Paul Anton von Esterházy in Eisenstadt from 1761 to 1790. In 1820 Prince Nikolaus II, who had dissolved the orchestra and thus caused Haydn's return to Vienna, had the bones of the composer brought back from Vienna to Eisenstadt and buried in the Bergkirche; in 1932 the Haydn Mausoleum was built there. The musical quotation shows the beginning of the self-ironic song "Der Greis" ("The Old Man") based on a text by Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim: "Hin ist alle meine Kraft" ("Gone is all my strength"). Haydn also had these words printed on his business card.
