Schubert, Franz (1797-1828)


Vienna-Wieden, Schuberthof. - The courtyard of the house at Kettenbrückengasse 6, a building typical of the Biedermeier period with its own well. Franz Schubert spent the last weeks of his life in this house in the apartment of his brother Ferdinand and died here on November 19, 1828. The musical quotation shows the beginning of one of his most famous songs, "Die Forelle" ("The Trout", op. 32, D 550): "In einem Bächlein helle da schoss in froher Eil" ("In a sparkling stream … darted about happily and swift …"). It was composed between 1816 and 1817.

Hand-colored etching by Herta Czoernig-Gobanz (1886-1970), estate signed. Plate size 20 x 18 cm (7¾ x 7 in), sheet size 35 x 29 cm (13¾ x 11½ in).
