Schubert, Franz (1797-1828)

Mödling, Höldrichsmühle. - Between 1820 and 1826 the composer often visited the inn in the romantic valley of Hinterbrühl near Mödling (Lower Austria) with friends. Legend has it that the famous song "Der Lindenbaum" ("The Linden Tree", D 911-5) from the cycle "Winterreise" ("Winter Journey", op. 89) based on poems by Wilhelm Müller was written here. The musical quotation shows the beginning of the song published in 1828: "Am Brunnen vor dem Tore da steht ein Lindenbaum" ("At the fountain in front of the gate there is a linden tree").
